Dr. Mirzaei’s foundational medical education was completed at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, followed by service as a General Practitioner in key regions. He further specialized in General Surgery at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. His commitment to advancing cardiac surgical techniques led him to complete a Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship at the prestigious Shahid Rajaei Cardiovascular Medical and Research Center in Iran. Enhancing his global expertise, Dr. Mirzaei undertook two years of specialized training at the Manchester Cardiac Surgery Center in the UK, earning M.R.I. credentials. Dr. Mirzaei is renowned for his groundbreaking surgical interventions. He performed the inaugural coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences in 1991 and subsequently introduced the first off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery at the same institution in 1995. Further demonstrating his innovative approach, he has conducted advanced stem cell injections in conjunction with coronary artery bypass surgeries for patients with diminished ejection fraction. His surgical volume is exceptionally high, having performed over 18,000 heart surgeries, encompassing coronary artery procedures, valve repair and replacement, and the treatment of congenital heart anomalies.
Academic Appointments and Institutional Development
Dr. Mirzaei has played a pivotal role in shaping academic cardiac surgery programs. He has served as an Assistant Professor and Associate Professor at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, contributing to the education and training of future cardiac surgeons. His leadership in establishing and managing critical care units is extensive. He was instrumental in founding the first cardiovascular surgery center at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences in Ghaem Hospital in 1991 and later led the Department, Operating Room, and ICU at Ghaem Hospital’s Cardiovascular Surgery Center from 1999 to 2011. Concurrently, he headed the Department, Operating Room, and ICU at Dr. Shariati Hospital’s Cardiovascular Surgery Center from 2009 to 2011. His leadership continued as the Head of the Department and Operating Room at Javad Al-Aemeh Specialized Heart Hospital from 2000 to the present. Dr. Mirzaei also founded the separate Cardiovascular Surgery Group at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences in 2007, managing it until 2011. His commitment to expanding access to specialized cardiac care is evident in his establishment of the first cardiovascular surgery centers at Zahedan University of Medical Sciences (1998) and Birjand University of Medical Sciences (2008). He also established the third specialized heart surgery center at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences within Dr. Shariati Hospital in February 2010.
