Dr. Michael Schmitz has established a formidable career through extensive leadership and profound clinical expertise. Since May 2021, he has led the Department of Nephrology at the Clinic for Geriatrics, General Internal Medicine, and Nephrology. Further cementing his leadership, he assumed the position of Chief Physician for Medical Clinic III at University Hospital Solingen in April 2022. Prior to this, from 2008 to 2021, he served as Lead Physician for the Clinic of Nephrology and General Internal Medicine at Solingen City Hospital, where he expertly managed quality initiatives for the Interdisciplinary Stroke Unit and oversaw transfusion responsibilities. His early career, from 2000 to 2008, was grounded in research and clinical practice as an assistant physician at the Clinic of Nephrology and Rheumatology at University Hospital Düsseldorf, building a strong foundation in nephrology.

Dr. Schmitz acquired his medical education from 1993 to May 2000 at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf and the University of Louisville, Kentucky, USA. He obtained his medical license in 2002. His doctoral research in 2003 focused on the “Antiproliferative effects of Paclitaxel (Taxol®) on human renal cancer cell lines and multidrug resistance phenotype” at the Institute of Pathology, Heinrich Heine University. His commitment to specialized knowledge is demonstrated by his qualifications as a specialist in Internal Medicine (2006) and Nephrology (2007). He enhanced his expertise in cardiovascular health by becoming a DHL Hypertensiologist in 2007 and a Hypertension Specialist of the European Society of Hypertension in 2013. Additional advanced training includes Internal Intensive Care (2014), Laboratory Diagnostics (2022), radio diagnostics, and emergency medicine. Dr. Schmitz also holds certifications in Good Clinical Practice and Good Medical Practice, alongside qualifications as a transfusion officer. His dedication to healthcare management was further solidified by completing his Master of Healthcare Administration (MHBA) program at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg from 2018 to 2021.
